For anyone considering taking up Surfing as their latest sport, the thought of your first day at the beach and your first attempts at catching waves can be a very intimidating thought. Most of the older guys you see in the water these days did not have the benefit of surf schools when they where learning.
Sometimes our egos can get in the way, because we may think we're actually better surfers than our performance on the waves clearly shows. In most countries, surfing instructors are required to be accredited coaches through the governing body for that country. And how do you know which board to use.
That warning stands for both new and experienced surfers, an unknown break is always potentially dangerous. The ideal boards to learn to surf on would be 8-9 ft, and wider than usual. There are midsize boards, often called funboards, which will give you the best of both worlds.
Make sure that the surf is safe before you go in. Know when to hold onto your surfboard and when to bail out.
