Surfing is the kind of sport where the person sits out past the break and is waiting for a wave to come so they can paddle and try to catch it before it breaks so that they can ride it and get a good ride. Maybe you are just visiting the golden state's coast and want to give those renowned waves a ride.
Have a couple of lessons first, maybe try a few different surfboards of various shapes and sizes, and then think a little more about what board is best for you. Short sleeved wetsuits are commonly known as spring suits and long sleeved are commonly called steamers. Today there are many surfing accessories in use that were not available to surfers of the 1960's such as wetsuits, leashes and rash guards.
In the summertime, the water is flat and is a charming spot for snorkeling, fishing and swimming. The leash was another welcome addition to the surfing world. At this point you have nothing to lose but your balance, and that is only temporary.
It may seem easier to jump up on one knee first, but this is not ideal. Respect the locals if you are visiting a beach.
