big wave surfing

Instead of thinking about how you re going to get your board into your car and how you re going to feel after your first wipeout, your most important thought should be what beach am I going to choose to get acclimated with my board and which beach is going to be easiest for me to catch my first waves. The first thing you will need is the right equipment.

Depending on the climate and water temperature in your area, you may need a wetsuit. I suggest you find a good surf school and take classes with an experienced instructor. Short sleeved wetsuits are commonly known as spring suits and long sleeved are commonly called steamers.

Always stay within your comfort zone. Your instructor will be able to give you basic lessons on how to surf, and they will be watching you during your learning process and giving you pointers on what is keeping you from catching those waves or any other problems you may have with getting the hang of it. You will notice that it is more natural to have one of your feet forward than the other.

There are so many great places to surf in southern California. Start in the whitewater, practice paddling your board and catching waves to start with.
