Instead of thinking about how you re going to get your board into your car and how you re going to feel after your first wipeout, your most important thought should be what beach am I going to choose to get acclimated with my board and which beach is going to be easiest for me to catch my first waves. Surfing lessons are all about taking your surfing to the next level regardless of how much experience, or lack thereof, you may have.
A surfboard that has enough flotation for your body size will be crucial to how easy it will be to stand up. Have a couple of lessons first, maybe try a few different surfboards of various shapes and sizes, and then think a little more about what board is best for you. They were later made from lighter wood and wood soon become made out of fiberglass and epoxy.
Everyone wants to ride a cool looking short board, but for learning to surf you should try and find yourself a longer board. The soft construction of the board ensures you don't get hurt during the spills while you still enjoy the thrills. You have more fun surfing with someone else, always have someone to talk to and most importantly proof that you scored the waves you tell everyone about.
So your fully decked out in your wettie, got your board and it's all waxed up and ready to go! Watch out for sharks!
