There are a myriad of factors which will influence your choice of board. The surf culture is so deeply rooted in Australia that coupled with the extensive coastline means that practically anywhere you go in Australia you will be able to find a good cheap surf school to get you through the basics and to the fun part within a few hours.
If they were not easy to carry and use then nobody would be surfing today because there are many people who have to walk for awhile before they can surf and nobody wants to carry a hundred pound wood surfboard. Longboards are more stable than shortboards, and catch waves with less effort on the part of the beginner surfer. It gives you something to look forward to after your surf and keeps you steady on your feet.
That warning stands for both new and experienced surfers, an unknown break is always potentially dangerous. Often you can hire these boards near your local beach, but if not, try and borrow someones mal. Practice jumping up in one motion, standing side on and keeping the board planing if possible.
Always wear sun-block. If you are paddling out then keep hold of your board, you'll get out back to the line up more quickly and you will not put anyone paddling out behind you at risk.
