Most of the older guys you see in the water these days did not have the benefit of surf schools when they where learning. When starting the search for your board, you will need to honestly assess your skill level.
If you don t have a good friend who is a surfer then you will be able to find help at your local surf shop, or by making your first couple of ventures into the water with a surf instructor. A good operator is a good sign they take the business of surfing instruction seriously. The waves that sunset beach produce can be tricky and dependant on the weather and tide conditions.
This is when the real work begins, paddling. In July, professional surfers gather here for the Billabong Pro tournament. Some of these beaches can surprise you with a wave you can ride for up to three minutes.
Generally the better the surfer the smaller their board in length, width and thickness. Know when to hold onto your surfboard and when to bail out.
