The North Shore on the island of Oahu has gigantic winter waves and is commonly referred to as wild water. A crowded beach with large, aggressive waves and experienced surfers is not where you will want to attempt surfing for the first time, it will be a very daunting experience and probably discourage you.
Test the water first, you might be able to get away with board shorts, but I would recommend a rash vest also. If you come across one that doesn t then it s usually possible to hire the necessary equipment from a surf shop. These things are important not only for your learning and safety, but also so that you don't get seventy-sixed from the good surfing spots by the other surfers for snaking their rides or being a rude surfer.
Paddling will get you out to the good waves, and paddling will help you catch one. When dropping in on a wave while surfing, always remember that where your head goes, your body follows. The midsize funboards can give you the stability of a longboard, but a little better maneuverability like a shortboard.
Watch out for sharks! Once you are confident, you can advance to the water.
