The popularity of surfing starting growing in the1960's when movies like Gidget and Beach Blanket Bingo, which exposed the rest of the world to a sport only known to locals who were lucky enough to live near the beach. Surfing is a popular and fun activity to enjoy the warm, long days of summer, but it can be a little intimidating if you don't know the first thing about it.
Your first board can really be the breaking point when it comes to whether you will pick up the sport or quit in frustration, many of us see the pros riding on their slick 6ft short boards slamming the lip and making it look like not only a hell of a lot of fun but also a real easy thing to do. Other famous world class Hawaii surf spots are kammies, backdoor, rocky point, laniakea, jockos and haleiwa just to name a few. The waves that sunset beach produce can be tricky and dependant on the weather and tide conditions.
Kenny Matte of Haleiwa says that you start the kids when they come out of the womb, they came from water so they immediately go back to the water. It resembles the longboard in length but it is thinner, less stable, and also called the Thruster, likes large, intimidating waves. But this is not always the case as some surfers prefer different styles of boards depending on when they paddle into a wave, how strong they are at paddling and how good balance they.
The type of board you will want to find should fit your skill level, your height, and the type of boarding experience you want to have. Always have a quick warm up and stretch before entering the surf.
