Like most sports, the best way to learn to surf is to do it. Like most sports, the best way to learn to surf is to do it.

Not only that but you can always talk it up with your mates over a few cold ones after. Longboards are more stable than shortboards, and catch waves with less effort on the part of the beginner surfer. Even if you think you're going to get beat by the wave, just keep paddling straight toward the wave.

The Longboard can also be used by beginners to advanced surfers. Without the ability to paddle you will not only never catch a wave, but more than likely never even get to the line up. So many times I have seen a beginner surfer spend a stack of coin on all the latest gear and then spend an hour getting thrown around in the white water, wondering how everyone else made it out the back, it is 90% in your paddling ability. This will reduce the risk of muscle injury or cramp whilst you are surfing.

Being a beginner at any sport can be a little intimidating, but if you go to a local surfing school to get started, it can help save you time, money, and embarrassment. You should always learn to read the water before you even start surfing.
